Pooled analysis showed a statistically significant greater weight loss with chitosan (weighted mean difference -1.7 kg; 95% CI -2.1 to -1.3; P < 0.00001), plus small decreases in total cholesterol and blood pressure.
When analyses were restricted to trials that met allocation-concealment criteria, were larger, or of longer duration, the decreases in weight and total cholesterol were substantially smaller.
