Which Retinoid Should You Use?
Retinoids are the best-proven topical actives for both anti-aging and acne — but "which one" trips people up. They mostly work through the same pathway; the real differences are strength, prescription status, and how well your skin tolerates them. Here’s how to choose, and how to start without the dreaded peeling phase.

Using a retinoid safely
Use on alternate nights.
Together they over-irritate; you get redness and peeling, not extra benefit.
Separate them, or use adapalene.
Benzoyl peroxide can degrade some retinoids; adapalene is specifically BP-stable.
SPF every morning.
Retinoids increase photosensitivity, and unprotected UV undoes their anti-aging benefit.
Avoid in pregnancy.
Topical retinoids are conventionally avoided in pregnancy. Azelaic acid is a well-tolerated alternative; bakuchiol lacks the retinoid mechanism of concern but is itself unstudied in pregnancy — confirm with your clinician.

Common questions
Retinol or tretinoin — which is better?
Tretinoin is stronger and faster (it’s already active retinoic acid) and has the deepest evidence, but it’s prescription and more irritating. Retinol is the gentler OTC version that converts in the skin. Start with retinol unless you want prescription-grade results and can tolerate it.
Is bakuchiol as good as retinol?
It’s gentler and a reasonable option for sensitive skin, but its evidence base is much smaller. If you tolerate a real retinoid, that remains the stronger choice.
Why is my skin peeling when I start? ("retinoid purge")
Early flaking and breakouts are common as cell turnover ramps up. Start 2–3 nights a week, moisturize, and build up — it usually settles in a few weeks. If it’s severe, dial back frequency.
Can I use a retinoid with vitamin C?
Yes — just at different times: vitamin C in the morning, retinoid at night. They don’t "cancel out," but using both at once can be irritating.
