Iodine and Kelp can interact. Iodine excess. Too much iodine can cause both hypothyroidism (the Wolff-Chaikoff effect) and thyrotoxicosis, and transient hyperthyroidism has been reported after kelp-containing products. A single seaweed-rich meal already moves urinary iodine and thyroid markers in healthy people. Do not take both. Choose one iodine source so the dose is known, and stay within 150 mcg/day for adults unless a clinician has said otherwise (the tolerable upper intake is 1100 mcg/day). Anyone with thyroid disease, or on levothyroxine or an antithyroid drug, should not add either without their clinician.

Kelp IS an iodine supplement — seaweed concentrates iodine, and content varies enormously between species, harvests and products. Taking it beside a measured iodine supplement stacks the same nutrient without a known total.
