In conclusion, YM represents a promising source of functional ingredients with broad potential for health-oriented and culinary applications.
Zhang C, Chen J, Ruan S, Wang Z, Dai X. · Critical reviews in food science and nutrition (2026)
Evidence supports several health benefits of YM, including anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-obesity, and cardioprotective properties, along with potential prebiotic effects.
However, safety concerns exist, particularly the possible formation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) during traditional drying processes.
Beyond its use as a beverage, YM shows strong potential in the food industry for applications in functional foods, nutraceuticals, and natural preservatives.
Considering climate change as a stressor is likely to provide a valuable conceptual framework within which its effects can be studied.
Vasudeva R, Tregenza T, Hosken DJ. · Current opinion in insect science (2026)
We review the potential effects of rising temperatures on mate choice in insects.
We suggest that there are multiple ways temperature increases could affect mate choice and preference-trait correlations, but the detail and significance of these effects will vary across taxa.
Increased temperatures are likely to be stressful and hence to impact condition with knock-on effects for mate choice.

This creates a situation whereby their offspring, whether through genetic and/or environmental transmission, are at heightened risk of developing a variety of different mental disorders, but which specific disorder offspring ultimately develop is not easy to predict.
Given that offspring inherit these multiple liabilities, it may not surprise that these liabilities manifest as different disorders at different points throughout their lives, but which disorder emerges at a particular time is difficult to foretell.

In and near Yellowstone National Park between 1995 and 2024, 59.3% of the matings were observed to be between wolves of different colour, while only 44.9% were expected to be.
Overall, from 1988 to 2019, 98.0% of the observed pairings were between mates with different phenotypes, while only 50% were expected.
Since then, there have been a large number of studies that have not found decreased mate sharing of HLA alleles and found mating frequencies consistent with random-mating expectations.
Together, these results demonstrate that facial-attractiveness judgements extend well beyond heterosexual mate choice and reflect the joint influence of facial structure, rater characteristics and sociocultural context.

Morphometric analyses further show that sexual shape dimorphism accounts for a substantial portion of the GAP.
Additionally, we observe a tendency for greater stringency among male raters.
This study draws on the largest worldwide collection of facial-attractiveness data assembled to date, which we make openly available to facilitate future research.

We used logistic regression to model poor adherence (< 80% pillbox engagement), and negative binomial regression to model adherence as a count of pillbox engagement.
RESULTS: Among 1,213 participants (nine clinics) in the control group, 61.2% (742) were male, the median age was 36 years, 63% (769) were living with HIV, with 66% (507/769) on antiretroviral therapy.
The median time to access clinical care was 127 min and 95% (1151/1213) reported no perceived stigmatization upon starting TB treatment.
Emphasizing the roles of multimodal signal-mediated sexual communication in parasitoids, this review sheds light on their integrated use and suggests implications for pest management and future research directions.
Tonğa A, Ali J, Adams B. · Journal of insect physiology (2026)
The interaction between different cues during courtship and mating is examined, highlighting how they influence reproductive behaviours and success.
Post-mating interactions are also discussed, focusing on how communication may continue to ensure maintenance of female reproductive strategies.
This review addresses the emerging field of sexual cue perception in parasitoids, emphasizing that while initial studies have only recently begun to explore underlying mechanisms, there remains a profound lack of understanding of how parasitoid nervous systems integrate multiple sensory inputs.
The current research provides insight into one set of psychological changes that may facilitate accelerated mating goals in response to environmental stressors.
Cunningham K, Mengelkoch S, Bradshaw HK, Mittal C, Hill SE. · Personality & social psychology bulletin (2026)
An internal meta-analysis of the five studies revealed adults with low CSES reported lower mate value following exposure to financial threat (relative to control).
Furthermore, lower self-perceived mate value predicted lower standards for indirect mating benefits and increased perceived compatibility with low-quality partners (Studies 2a-3).
Similar responses were not observed among individuals from high CSES environments.

The results suggest that SPMV is a robust correlate of self-esteem across diverse measures and demographic groups, highlighting its relevance in understanding self-worth.
J S, Barman JD, Maheshwari S. · Journal of sex & marital therapy (2026)
The findings revealed a strong positive association between SPMV and self-esteem (r = 0.512, 95% CI = [0.467, 0.553], p < 0.001).
Meta-regression and subgroup analysis revealed that the association between the two variables is strong and consistent across various variables; hence, no significant moderating effect of gender, age, self-esteem measures, or mate value measures is found.
These findings are consistent with sociometer theory, which posits that self-esteem functions as a gauge of social acceptance and evolutionary perspectives on mate value.
Given that most Orthopteran species rely on acoustic communication for mate attraction and reproductive success, it is imperative to study the impacts of ALAN on their acoustic behavior.
Gupta K, Singh P, Sehrawat L, Diwakar S. · Journal of insect physiology (2026)
This review highlights the physiological traits affected by ALAN such as body size, developmental time, survival rate, reproductive investment, circadian rhythm, and immune response.
Behaviors affected by ALAN, such as visual orientation, locomotion, calling behavior, and mate searching, are also highlighted.
It emphasizes the critical need for targeted research on their calling behavior, the efficacy of acoustic signals, mate attraction, and reproductive success for understanding the behavioural shifts as a consequence of ALAN.
We conclude that a more satisfying account of human mating will require refined measurement of its social embeddedness, greater focus on conflict negotiation, and continued cross-cultural research.
Agey E, Conroy-Beam D, Lawson DW. · Evolutionary anthropology (2026)
However, despite ample evidence that human mate selection is uniquely shaped by others, existing research allocates outsized attention to individual preferences.
Here, we take stock of the implications of arranged marriage, highlighting measurement issues that obscure continua of parental influence and likely drive inconsistency in the downstream literature.
We conclude that a more satisfying account of human mating will require refined measurement of its social embeddedness, greater focus on conflict negotiation, and continued cross-cultural research.
Our study unifies several decades of knowledge on conspicuous traits, confirms many predictions made by the theory of sexual selection, and lays a clear path for the future of research on this topic.
Pollo P, Lagisz M, Macedo-Rego RC, Mizuno A, Yang Y, Nakagawa S. · Ecology letters (2025)
Most of these patterns are consistent across both taxa and sexes, underscoring the generalisability of our results.
Furthermore, the strength of pre-copulatory sexual selection on conspicuousness is positively associated with the relationship between (i) conspicuousness and fitness benefits and (ii) conspicuousness and individual condition.
This suggests that the relationships we assessed regarding trait conspicuousness would be stronger if we could select only traits that are truly used for mate attraction.
