Galactooligosaccharides and Probiotics are generally complementary — many people take them together. Reasonable to pair, but judge it on symptoms rather than on the bifidogenic mechanism. Start GOS at 1.4-2.5 g/day.
Mechanistically coherent, but note that raising bifidobacteria has NOT translated into symptom benefit: the meta-analysis in IBS and functional bowel disorders found no global symptom response. In one trial combining GOS with a low-FODMAP diet, bifidobacteria actually FELL.
GOS is the substrate bifidobacteria ferment — the textbook synbiotic rationale for pairing it with a bifidobacteria-containing probiotic.
What to do: Reasonable to pair, but judge it on symptoms rather than on the bifidogenic mechanism. Start GOS at 1.4-2.5 g/day.
