Iron and L. plantarum 299v are generally complementary — many people take them together. Take with the same meal as the iron, not separated.
More absorbed iron per milligram taken, with better tolerability — potentially allowing a lower iron dose. The tolerability finding comes from an open-label trial, so treat its size as provisional. Note it did NOT improve on ferrous sulfate alone in iron-deficient children.
The strain increases fractional absorption of non-heme iron by roughly 50% when taken with the same meal, shown in double-isotope studies in menstruating women.
