Calcium and Soy Isoflavones are generally complementary — many people take them together. Soy isoflavones (40–80 mg/day) may be combined with calcium to enhance bone protection, particularly in estrogen-deficient states. Note: soy proteins contain phytate which may modestly reduce calcium absorption if taken as a single large meal dose.
Meta-analyses show soy isoflavone supplementation combined with calcium supplementation significantly reduces bone loss in postmenopausal women compared to calcium alone, particularly at the lumbar spine.
Soy isoflavones (genistein, daidzein) act as selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs), stimulating ER-β on osteoblasts to promote bone matrix synthesis and calcium deposition. Genistein also inhibits osteoclast differentiation via NF-κB pathway suppression. This estrogenic bone protection complements dietary calcium by improving the cellular machinery that incorporates calcium into bone.
