Systematic review of the mechanisms and evidence behind the hypocholesterolaemic effects of HPMC, pectin and chitosan in animal trials

Systematic review of animal trials examining the cholesterol-lowering mechanisms of HPMC, pectin, and chitosan.
From a meta-analysis of 67 controlled trials of soluble fibres (PMID 9925120): across 2 to 10 g a day, each gram lowered total cholesterol by 0.045 mmol/L and LDL by 0.057 mmol/L, with pectin no different from oat or psyllium fibre, so 3 g is about 0.13 mmol/L and 10 g about 0.45 mmol/L of total cholesterol. The authors call the effect small within the practical range of intake. In healthy people with normal cholesterol, 12 g of pectin a day for 4 weeks did not change cholesterol (PMID 2992264). The relationship was modelled only up to 10 g.
