Ease leg heaviness, swelling and varicose-vein symptoms. Ranked by evidence strength from 8 supplements backed by peer-reviewed clinical research.
Top picks: Horse Chestnut, Diosmin, and Red Vine Leaf Extract — full evidence and dosage details below.
Chronic venous insufficiency is the leg heaviness, aching, ankle swelling and varicose veins that come from leg veins struggling to return blood to the heart. A handful of plant-derived venoactive compounds are studied for it. Horse chestnut seed extract (aescin) has the most trial data, with a Cochrane review finding less leg pain and swelling than placebo over the short term, and diosmin, usually as a micronised purified flavonoid fraction, is a licensed venotonic in parts of Europe. Butcher's broom, rutin and red vine leaf extract rest on smaller trials. These ease symptoms, they do not repair damaged vein valves. Compression, leg elevation and regular walking come first, and sudden one-sided leg swelling, skin changes or an ulcer need a doctor, not a supplement.
Ranked by pooled effect on this goal's primary outcome where data exists, otherwise by overall evidence strength + goal relevance.
